If you're looking for girls football in Caerphilly, you may be wondering where to start. What age can your daughter begin playing? Does she need previous football experience? What happens at training? And how do you find the right team?
At Caerphilly Castle FC, we want to make getting involved in girls' football as straightforward and welcoming as possible.
We provide football opportunities for girls across a range of ages and abilities, from young players taking their first steps into the game through to junior and women's football. Our aim is to help girls enjoy football, develop their skills, make friends and feel part of a team.
There is no single "right" age to start playing football. Some girls begin when they are very young and simply want to run around, play with a ball and have fun. Others discover football later and decide they want to give it a try. At Caerphilly Castle FC, our younger age groups provide an opportunity for children to learn the basics of football in an enjoyable environment. Our U5 girls' team focuses on learning through fun, helping young players develop skills such as ball control, passing, movement and coordination while becoming comfortable playing as part of a team. As players get older, the sessions gradually develop alongside their footballing ability, introducing more technical skills, decision-making, teamwork and understanding of the game.
Caerphilly Castle FC has a number of girls' teams covering different age groups. Our current junior pathway includes teams from U6 through to U14, giving young players the opportunity to progress through the club as they develop.
You can find out more about each age group below:
Each age group has its own training arrangements and coaching environment. For example, the U6s currently train at St Martins School, while older age groups train at venues including St Cenydd School and Bedwas School.
Training will vary depending on the age group, but sessions can include a mixture of:
For our youngest players, sessions are particularly focused on making football enjoyable while introducing fundamental skills.
As players get older, training can become more detailed, helping them understand different aspects of the game and develop their technical and tactical ability.
Our U8s, for example, work on passing, dribbling, first touch, movement and finishing while continuing to learn through playing.
This is completely normal. Joining a new football team can be a big step for a child, particularly if they don't know anyone there. That's why creating a welcoming environment is so important.
Football isn't just about learning how to pass, shoot or defend. It's also about confidence, friendships, teamwork and feeling comfortable as part of a group. If your daughter is nervous, let the coach know when you make contact. They can explain what to expect and help make that first session as comfortable as possible.
You don't have to know everything about football before joining a team. You don't even have to be particularly confident. Sometimes the hardest part is simply turning up for the first session.
For a first session, you generally don't need lots of specialist equipment. It's worth checking with the individual team before attending, as requirements can vary depending on the venue and age group.
In general, players should have:
If you're unsure about what your child needs, contact the relevant team before attending.
