Football gives girls the opportunity to learn new skills, try new things and take on challenges in a team environment. As players improve, they can develop confidence in their football ability while also learning to make decisions, communicate with teammates and deal with both successes and setbacks. The FAW's women and girls' strategy places confidence at the heart of its vision for girls and women's football in Wales.
Joining a football team is a great way for girls to meet other players and develop friendships. Training sessions and matches provide regular opportunities to spend time with teammates, work towards shared goals and enjoy football together. The FAW's BE.FC programme was created specifically to provide teenage girls with a social, relaxed environment where they can play football and make friends.
Football is an enjoyable way for girls to stay active. Training involves running, movement, coordination and football skills, helping players stay physically active while taking part in a sport they enjoy. For many girls, enjoying the activity and being part of a team can make regular exercise something they look forward to each week.
Football teaches girls how to work with other people. Players learn to communicate, support teammates, listen to coaches and work together during training and matches. These are useful skills both on and off the football pitch.
From their first session, players can gradually develop their football ability. Depending on their age and experience, training can include passing, dribbling, ball control, shooting, defending, movement and decision-making. Girls don't need to be experienced footballers to get started. The FAW provides opportunities for girls at different ages and stages, from Huddle sessions for younger girls through to grassroots clubs and recreational programmes for teenagers.
A football club can give girls a sense of belonging. Being part of a team means having teammates to train with, coaches to learn from and shared experiences throughout the season. For many players, the friendships and memories they make can be just as important as what happens on match day.
Girls' football continues to grow across Wales. The FAW confirmed in 2025 that more than 20,000 women and girls were registered to play football in Wales, with participation having grown by 58% between June 2022 and December 2025. At Caerphilly Castle FC, girls can get involved across a range of age groups, giving players the opportunity to enjoy football, develop their skills and be part of a local team.
