Sunday 18th March –
South Wales Girls League – Away to Garw
Today
saw Caerphilly take the long trip to Garw, with the sun shining and an
excellent surface everything was in place for a good game. To the benefit of both sets of players
they did not disappoint with a thrilling and close game. Caerphilly dominated possession for
pretty much the whole game but territory was the area most contested with
much of the play in the middle of the park.
It
was a very physical and fair game and both teams were set on taking the
points, Caerphilly made the breakthrough in the first half with a great
cross from Jasmine that was finished off well by Erin “the goal machine”
Murray. Every Caerphilly player that
stepped foot on the pitch today gave their all but special mentions for
Jasmine, Megan, Annesha and Ruth who covered every blade of grass and gave
their all.
A
great team performance from 1-16 today.
Sunday 11th March –
South Wales Girls League – Away to Thornhill Athletic
Result: Caerphilly 5 Thornhill Athletic 2
Sunday 4th March –
South Wales Girls League – Home to Thornhill Athletic
Today
saw Caerphilly welcome Thornhill Athletic for their first meeting of the
season between the two clubs and with Caerphilly back on their home ground at
Owain Glyndwr. Although sunny there
was a strong wind blowing from left to right and the pitch was soft
underfoot and cut up from the men’s game earlier in the day.
Caerphilly
won the toss and elected to play from left to right with the wind advantage
in the first half. Caerphilly
started slowly allowing Thornhill more room and giving them opportunities
to press. The game soon settled and
Caerphilly started to play with composure and passed the ball well creating
a number of chances. The first break
of the game came after about 15 minutes and a great through ball set Erin
up for the first of what would be a spectacular 5 goal bag. Just before half time Caerphilly doubled
their lead, 2-0 half time. Second
half with the wind against Caerphilly really turned it on and started to
play some great football, in parts a little too clever with a few passes
too many or passes that were not even on.
The whole team though were up for the game now and another 5 goals,
one a beautiful layoff from Erin setting Megan up for a 28 yard low drive
in to the bottom corner leaving the keeper no chance. Thornhill never gave up though and a 1 on
1 offence with the Caerphilly keeper resulted in a spot kick been awarded,
Mica made a fine save with her feet to maintain the clean sheet and prevent
Thornhill scoring from the spot kick.
This was one of a number of superb saves from the Caerphilly keeper,
one of which was a single hand deflecting a shot on to the cross bar. A great team performance from Caerphilly
who are now starting to find their rhythm again after a few unfortunate and
undeserved results. Well done to the
Caerphilly defence who were solid the whole game and well done to Sophie
for 4 assist today prior to been carried off with an ankle injury. Caerphilly finishing the game with only 9
players were deserved winners.
Caerphilly
Scorers: Erin (5), Megan (1),
Kanisha (1)
Result: Caerphilly 7 Thornhill Athletic 0
Wednesday 22nd
February – Tesco Cup Semi Final – Away to Garw
Result: Caerphilly 3 Garw 0
Sunday 19th February
– South Wales Girls League – Home to Cardiff City
Caerphilly welcomed Cardiff City today only having
played them a few weeks earlier in Cardiff and Caerphilly were looking to
improve on the disappointing result of that game (lost 3 – 0!). Although the weather was good for the
game the ground was still wet underfoot in places and therefore not ideal
pitch conditions.
The result of their earlier encounter made Caerphilly
the underdogs for the game and Cardiff
certainly began the game with more confidence. However Caerphilly soon settled and
gained some composure and played as a team with some good attacking
football with a number of shots on goal.
Caerphilly were certainly getting the better of the game when
Cardiff were awarded a free kick that gave them a good attaching position
and resulted in a disappointing goal before half time. Half time score 0 – 1 to Cardiff.
The half time score meant that Caerphilly had to keep
their heads up and continue to play the quality of football they had done
in the first half and they did this with conviction and good team
spirit. Caerphilly were dominant in
possession and territory and it was only the solid Cardiff defence that
kept our strikers from scoring on a number of occasions but true to form
Erin battled on and the goal eventually came making it 1 – 1! The remainder of the game was played with
baited breath and Caerphilly certainly worked hard to find a winning goal
that never quite made it to fruition.
Caerphilly’s perseverance was not reflected in the final result
which was 1 – 1!
There are a few things to work on in training but
overall a great game of football with both sets of supporters being kept on
their toes for the full 70 minutes!
Sunday 12th February
– Welsh Cup Quarter Final – Away to Kinmel Bay
Result: Lost 3-2 after Extra Time, 2-2 at full
time
Sunday 22nd January –
South Wales Girls League – Away to Cardiff City
Result: Lost 3-0
Sunday 15th January –
South Wales Girls League – Home to Troedyrhiw
Caerphilly
welcomed Troedyrhiw today looking for an improvement on the last game and
return to winning ways. Although
bitterly cold overnight the pitch had thawed somewhat and was very heavy
underfoot. Caerphilly were without
their Captain Megan for today’s fixture due to ankle injury.
The
game started at a fantastic tempo with Troedyrhiw establishing the first
real attack. Caerphilly then
regained some composure and began to dominate possession and territory with
a number of chances on goal squandered or promising attacks breaking down
with the final pass. It was
therefore Troedyrhiw who took the initiative and lead mid way through the
first half. The game was developing
in to a very close, physical and example of how good girls football is and
providing lots of excitement for both sets of fans. Caerphilly finally found the breakthrough
5 minutes before half time with Erin scoring the first of what would be a
memorable hat-trick.
The
second half was much of the same with long spells of Caerphilly possession
and domination but lacking on the final pass or in front of goal. Again it was Troedyrhiw who took the
initiative and regained the lead, as before Caerphilly’s determination and
perseverance resulted in another goal for Erin. The lead was not long lived with
Troedyrhiw once again finding the back of the Caerphilly net, 3-2 to
Troedyrhiw. Caerphilly were now
throwing everything at the opposition and finally Erin once again found
away through to seal her hat-trick and level the scores. The game then suffered a number of at
times lengthy interruptions due to injuries the most notable to the
Caerphilly keeper Mica and the Caerphilly centre back Annesha who had to
withdraw from the game, with no substitutes remaining Caerphilly were going
to have to hold out with 10 players.
Again Caerphilly threw everything at the opposition and were very
unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. Unfortunately it was Troedyrhiw who once
again took the lead from a sublime free kick some 30 yards out struck in to
the roof of the net by Chloe Lloyd.
With minutes to go it was all Caerphilly and Erin found her way
through on goal only to see her shot veer wide of the left upright. An excellent game off football, well done
to Erin for her hat-trick, Jodie & Sophie for their assists and special
note to Shelby, Jasmine, Naomi, Ruth & Annesha who gave their all and
never gave up. Final score
Caerphilly 3 v 4 Troedyrhiw.
Sunday 8th January –
South Wales Girls League – Home to Mardy Tigers
Caerphilly
welcomed Mardy Tigers to Llanfabon drive today in their second encounter of
the league campaign with Caerphilly coming out 12-0 winners
previously. The ground was very
heavy under foot and was going to make playing conditions both difficult
technically and also physically.
Both
teams were looking to kick off 2012 with a bang and the game was slow to
develop with both teams sharing both possession and both guilty of making
mistakes in areas of the pitch.
Possession and territory was shared equally however a mis-timed
challenge in the penalty area resulted in Mardy taking the lead with the
resulting, and well taken penalty leaving the Caerphilly keeper no
chance. Both teams battled hard and
a fair but physical game developed.
Mardy then pressed Caerphilly once more with a through pass to a
player who was clearly off-side but not picked up by the referee left the
Mardy striker 1 on 1 with the Caerphilly keeper to slot home, half time 2-1
to Mardy Tigers.
Caerphilly
started brighter in the second half and started to have more possession
however the final shot on goal or opportunity to finish never came to
fruition. The corner count alone
highlights how tight a game this was and how few chances put either team
under pressure with probably only 4 corners in the whole game. Caerphilly continued to press and push
players forward, a 50-50 challenge between the Caerphilly striker and the
Mardy goalkeeper disrupted play for a number of minutes with Erin
unfortunately unable to continue, Caerphilly down to 10 players. Caerphilly again pressed and were
unfortunately caught on the break resulting in another goal to Mardy. With minutes remaining another Caerphilly
player had to leave the field through injury leaving 9 able bodied players
on the pitch. Caerphilly continued
to mount attacks and put the Mardy defence under pressure but it was not to
be with Mardy taking the honours 3-2 on the day. An excellent captain’s performance from
Megan, who also picked up a knock during the game and some great play by
Naomi and Shelby supported by two goals from Erin and Jasmine with assists
on both occasions from Megan. Not
the result Caerphilly wanted to kick off the 2012 campaign but a spirited
performance and I am sure the team will bounce back in the next fixture.
Sunday 4th December –
Tesco Cup Quarter Final – Home to Cyncoed
Caerphilly
welcomed Cyncoed today for the Quarter Final of the Tesco Cup having
already played them twice in the league with Caerphilly victorious on both
previous outings.
Caerphilly
came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and even on a very wet and
heavy pitch produced some great attacking football. The visitors started the game with a
defensive game plan lining five up at the back allowing Caerphilly more
space in midfield. The Caerphilly
midfield utilised this space to great effect led by their captain Megan,
who by the end of the game had covered every blade of grass in a true
captains performance leading from the front. The Caerphilly defensive line although
not pressured in the first half played well supporting the Caerphilly
attacks with the full backs becoming highly influential and instrumental in
the Caerphilly attacks linking with the wide players. There were a number of missed opportunities
in the first half and two strikes on goal which clattered the woodwork, one
from Megan from 28yds and one from Kanisha from about 25yds. Caerphilly’s domination in terms of
possession and territory finally broke the deadlock.
2nd
half was much of the same with some excellent inter passing football and
wing play, Caerphilly’s intent on playing the football and passing the ball
around also caused problems due to the conditions and players holding on to
the ball too long. Cyncoed were
lifted in the second half and put Caerphilly under some pressure with
attacking football although the Caerphilly keeper was only tested from
range. Caerphilly continued to press
and the final score saw them march in to the Semi Finals with a comfortable
4-0 win.
Caerphilly
scorers Erin (2), Kanisha (1) and Abbi-Mae (1).
Sunday 27th November
– South Wales Girls League – Away to Llanyrafon
Caerphilly
travelled to Llanyrafon looking to maintain their unbeaten record in the
league. With the weather of late the
pitch reflected this and was very wet underfoot. Caerphilly got off to a strong start and
placed Llanyrafon under significant pressure and two goals soon
followed. Llanyrafon started to
settle down and a solid midfield battle ensued with both teams fighting for
everything. Caerphilly struck again
only for Llanyrafon to create their own chance and bring the score back to
3-1. Just before half time a
Llanyrafon defender handled in the area giving the Referee no alternative
but to award a penalty, Kanisha stepped up and struck a sweet penalty in to
the corner giving the keeper no chance.
At half time the score 4-1 Caerphilly with the away team having
dominated most of the 1st half.
2nd
half Llanyrafon started to play more lifted by the earlier goal and pressed
Caerphilly hard and created a few chances, Caerphilly then started to
settle a little allowing for Alisha to also get on the score sheet. Llayrafon continued to create chances and
put the Caerphilly defence under pressure, eventually the pressure resulted
in a Caerphilly player handling the ball and once again the Referee had no
alternative but to award a penalty, the penalty was well taken and powered
in to the bottom right hand corner, again leaving the keeper no
chance. Again this drove Llanyrafon
on and the both teams competed for everything, Caerphilly finally sealed
the win with a goal from 2nd half substitute Erin. Final score Caerphilly 6 – Llanyrafon 2.

Sunday 9th October –
South Wales Girls League – Away to Mardy Tigers
With
the exception of the strong left to right wind the conditions could not
have been better for today’s fixture.
Caerphilly started playing left to right with the wind advantage.
Caerphilly
came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and after some good passing
play through the team scored the decisive first goal. Caerphilly continued to dominate
possession and territory, early on Shelby had to be replaced due to illness
and a quick re-shuffle by the Caerphilly Coach saw Sydnie taking up the
centre back role. Caerphilly created
a number of chances with Ruth shooting just wide of the post. At half time the score was Caerphilly 6
with no reply from Mardy.
At
half time Annesha had to withdraw through a suspected hamstring injury and
another re-shuffle was made with Ruth taking up a centre back role
alongside Sydnie and Alisha taking up the right wing position. Caerphilly continued to play passing
football with most players involved in every play. Building on the first half the quality of
the corners from Jodie continued to cause problems and in the second half a
number of goals came from the set plays with a real power header from Erin
rebounding off the cross bar. The
Caerphilly defence was strong throughout the game with excellent displays
by all, Bethan & Naomi at full back especially becoming involved in most
attacking and defending plays.
Caerphilly suffered a setback about 10 minutes from time with Ruth
picking up a knock to her left knee, with no further subs available to the
Coach Caerphilly had to play out the game with only 10 players. Final score Caerphilly 12 v Mardy Tigers
0, a score that does not highlight the fighting spirit and determination of
the Mardy team. Congratulations to
Kanisha & Jodie for the opposition Talent ID votes and to the
Caerphilly goal scorers Jasmine (1), Kanisha (1) and Erin (10)
Sunday 25th September
– South Wales Girls League – Home to Llanyrafon FC
Although
the sky’s had cleared and the sun bore down the pitch itself was very wet
under foot as both teams took to the field.
The first half saw Caerphilly playing from left to right with
Caerphilly having kick off.
Caerphilly opted for an attacking 3-5-2 formation to start.
Llanyrafon
started the game much brighter than Caerphilly and after a spell of
possession and territorial advantage opened the scoring with a goal from
Kirsty Ridler. This appeared to wake
up the Caerphilly players who quickly settled in to their rhythm and
started to take a hold of the game.
Some great passing football throughout the team led to a number of
well taken goals. Ruth & Jasmine
Turner were running everything down the right hand side with support from
Sophie. The back three of Ruth,
Helena and Annesha settled in to their game and Caerphilly began passing
the ball around and playing from the back through the team to the
forwards. Just before half time and
after some continued Caerphilly pressure a Llanyrafon player inadvertently
handled the ball giving the Referee no choice but to award the
penalty. Jodie stepped up to take
the penalty and although the keeper got hands to it couldn’t keep it
out. The Caerphilly pressure
continued and the Llanyrafon keeper made some excellent saves including a
superb finger tip reactive save from a close range volley, the teams went
in at half time with the score 7-1 to Caerphilly. The second half continued where the first
half left off with continued Caerphilly possession and territorial
advantage. The possession and
territory paid off with a number of goals being scored, one memorable
strike fell to Abbi-Mae Morgan who from about 20-25 yds out on the wide
left hit a first time defensive clearance straight back chipping the keeper
and finishing in the back of the net.
Final score 17-1 to Caerphilly but does not reflect the work ethic
and perseverance of a Llanyrafon team who never gave up. Well done to all the goal scorers in
particular Megan & Kanisha for their hat-tricks and Erin for her double
hat-trick.
Sunday 11th September
– South Wales Girls League – Home to Cyncoed FC
A wet and windy day marked the
start of the season for both teams, Caerphilly had kick off playing from
left to right with Cyncoed opting for the wind advantage in the first
half. After all the pre season
training and friendlies the time for talking was over and it was now down
to the girls to apply themselves as they had been taught in terms of
formation, football style and communication.
Caerphilly got off to a great
start with the midfield of Sophie, Megan, Jodie, Shelby and Kanisha
controlling the game. After some
great passing moves opportunities started to be created with both Shelby
& Sophie getting some shots off.
The breakthrough finally came with Sophie breaking the deadlock with
a venomous strike just inside the box in to the roof of the net giving the
Cyncoed goalkeeper no chance. Erin
then got on the score sheet with a neat left foot finish after some superb
football from a Caerphilly team who were starting to enforce some control
on the game. Cyncoed never gave up
though and pressed Caerphilly hard, the Caerphilly back line however held
firm with Sydnie and Annesha continuing in their centre back pairing. The Caerphilly defensive unit was
starting to produce the most positive football in the team with
distribution from Mica in goal to the fullbacks Bethan and Naomi who drove up
the wing supported by midfield. One such
sortie down the left from Naomi linking with Megan and Kanisha finally
resulted in the ball to Jodie who from some 28 yards out put the ball in
the bottom right hand corner and giving the Cyncoed keeper no chance. Cyncoed continued to press and Caerphilly
had a period of some 10-15 minutes where the team shape fell apart, the
formation was gone resulting in more open play and Cyncoed possession. The remaining action in the first half
was an inadvertent pass back by a Cyncoed player. A wall was formed and the ball was laid
back to Sophie who put the shot just wide of the upright. Half time saw the home team leading 4-0.
Clearly the Caerphilly Coach had
words with his team at half time and the second half saw a number of
changes been made with the back four been changed. The new right back got off to a superb
start taking control of the right side of the pitch and continuing from the
first half distribution from Mica to Ruth resulted in some great wing
player with Ruth on a number of occasions linking with Sophie and
Jasmine. The introduction of
Abbi-mae on the left also started paying dividends with a number of runs
down the wing supported by Helena and Megan. Only two more goals were
scored in the second half with the final score 6-0 to Caerphilly, a tough
opening game for both teams and I am sure both Coach’s will take learning’s
away from the game. Congratulations
to Erin for her hat-trick and to Erin & Annesha for their Talent ID
nominations.
Sunday 4th September –
Pre Season Friendly – Away to Pontardawe FC
Great game of football played
today at the Recreation Ground, Pontardawe between Caerphilly &
Pontardawe Under 16’s, both teams playing their last warm up game prior to
the season start.
The first 10 minutes saw some
quite balanced play in terms of territory but Caerphilly having the upper
hand in terms of possession. Caerphilly then began to get in to their
stride and started to dominate possession which resulted in the first goal
falling to Caerphilly. Pontardawe continued to battle and the game
became a great test of character between the two midfields.
Caerphilly started to play some great passing football and slowly began to
dominate in the midfield battle resulting in another two Caerphilly goals.
Pontardawe continued to press and tested the Caerphilly defence on a number
of occasions, the Caerphilly defence in only their second game however
began to gel together and the threat was neutralised. Caerphilly
started to then use the wide players more and bringing the fullbacks in to
the game in a supporting role to midfield. Some great wing play by
Jasmine Turner and Shelby Richards eventually was stopped by a mis-timed
challenge, although outside the box the Referee controversially pointed to
the spot and Jodie Robson gave the keeper no chance with a powerful drive
down the middle of the goal. Caerphilly were now on top and were
beginning to dominate possession resulting in another two goals before half
time. The first from a text book corner from Jodie Robson which the
defender could only turn in to her own net. Megan Bailey and Sophie
Hancocks were now starting to display a great football partnership and were
beginning to dominate in the midfield battle. Half time came with the
home team trailing by six goals. Caerphilly started the second half
as they finished the first dominating possession and playing some great
flowing football both out wide and down the middle. Pontardawe were
not giving in and again created a number of openings breaking through
midfield only to be stopped by a well organised defensive unit and a couple
of great stops by the Caerphilly keeper, Mica Buffin. Caerphilly’s
territorial and possession advantage began to pay dividends with four more
goals with the game ending 10-0 to Caerphilly. Erin Murray scored
four to get her first hat-trick in Caerphilly colours and goals from Megan
Bailey and Kanisha Underdown completed the scoring. A solid
performance from Caerphilly and a great game off football for the
spectators played in the true spirit of the game by both sets of players.
Tuesday 30th August –
Pre Season Friendly – Home to Cimla FC
First
full game for the Caerphilly Under 16 squad in readiness for the upcoming
season saw Caerphilly entertaining Cimla FC from the West Wales Girls
League.
Caerphilly
laid out their stall right from the kick off with the midfield of Sophie
Hancocks, Megan Bailey, Kanisha Underdown and Jasmine Turner taking control
of the middle of the park. The
desire from the Caerphilly players was clear to see and took Cimla by
surprise. The game progressed with
Caerphilly dominating both possession and territory and some brave
defending by Cimla and some great stops by their keeper prevented an early
goal. The domination however and the
inevitable happened with Caerphilly through some great interplay scoring
the first goal. The Caerphilly Coach
had setup his team to utilise the full backs as wing backs and both
fullbacks in Naomi Thompson and Bethan Bushen were involved in most
attacking moves supporting midfield as required. Jodie Robson and Shelby Richards were
proving a handful for the Cimla defence up front and after two superb
corners previously the third corner delivery was placed on a sixpence for
Megan Bailey to power a header in to the back of the Cimla goal. At the half time whistle Caerphilly held
a 3-0 lead. The second half started
much as the first but against a more determined Cimla side who’s half team
talk had motivated them and they pressed more. The Caerphilly defence stood strong and the
centre back partnership of Sydnie Price and Annesha Bashal stood up well to
the task. A number of substitutions
were made and the introduction of Ruth Turner demonstrating her
electrifying pace down the right, Taylor Tamcken–Smith maintaining the strength
at the back. Again the midfield of
Caerphilly continued to dominate and Megan Bailey appeared to be everywhere
as did Sophie Hancocks at times to the frustration of the Caerphilly Coach
when they were both in behind their own defence. Whilst the territorial and possession
advantage remained throughout the game Caerphilly only netted once more
with the score at the final whistle 4-0 to Caerphilly. Suffice to say the Caerphilly coaching
staff were full of praise for the team after a confident first outing.
